Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What are the benefits of doing telehealth instead of in-person therapy?

While in-person therapy may be the treatment of choice in many cases, there are unique advantages to telehealth, online therapy through video. One significant benefit of telehealth is the opportunity to have a therapy session wherever you, are, increasing convenience and reducing geographical, physical, or lifestyle limitations. Research has shown that telehealth is shown to be as effective as in-person therapy, particularly when using a CBT framework.

  2. What are the risks of doing telehealth?

Due to the use of technology and the Internet, there may be moments that are distorted by technical failures. We will discuss things we can due to significantly reduce that prior to starting therapy. Telehealth may not be the best fit for everyone. If I believe you may benefit from in-person therapy more than telehealth, I will assist you in finding a therapist who may be a better fit for you.

  3. What about confidentiality when doing telehealth?

Telehealth follows the same laws around confidentiality and privacy as in-person therapy. Information cannot be disclosed without written consent.  The only exceptions are if and when there is suspected child, elder, and dependent adult abuse/neglect or if the client has imminent plans to harm to themselves or others. In that case, I make every effort to ensure the safety of those affected as required by law.

  4. If I am not in California, can I still have therapy sessions with you?

It depends on what state you are in at the time. If you are a California resident traveling to another state and wish to have a session with me, I am required to check with that state to see if I am permitted. If they allow it, I am happy to continue conducting therapy sessions with you. If they do not allow it, we will discuss the next best plan whether it be waiting until you return to California or assisting you in finding a therapist in that state (e.g. if you are moving away).

  5. Do you accept insurance?

I do not directly deal with insurance companies, but my services may be reimbursable for out-of-network benefits by most insurance plans. Some questions for your insurance company:

    • Do I have behavioral health benefits?

    • Is there a deductible? How much is it and has it been met?

    • What is the covered amount per therapy session with a licensed clinical psychologist?

    • How many sessions per calendar year does my plan cover?

If requested, I will gladly generate an invoice for you to file claims with your carrier.

  6. What is your cancellation policy?

Once an appointment hour is scheduled, you will be expected to pay for it in full unless you provide at least 24 hours advance notice of cancellation or rescheduled appointments. Missed appointments are charged in full.  Of course, emergencies and illness will considered.
